This year, the 50/50 Group of Sierra Leone is proud to celebrate the naming of Founder and First President of The 50/50 Group of Sierra Leone, Dr. Nemata Majeks-Walker as one of the 2015 BBC Inspirational Women.

This is a notable and significant achievement for Dr. Majeks-Walker who has devoted a major part of her life to promoting gender issues.  It is equally an achievement for Sierra Leone by being placed on the map for making strides in this arena, thanks to efforts of the likes of Dr. Majeks-Walker.

The 50/50 Group, which Dr. Nemata Majeks-Walker founded in 2001, has focused primarily on women’s leadership and political participation and has over the years become the leading organization on especially women’s political empowerment issues. The group continues to be committed to the advancement of women in politics and in decision-making in Sierra Leone and seeks the continued support of Sierra Leoneans. Gender equality and the empowerment of women is the responsibility of every man and woman in the country.  One way to celebrate Nemata’s achievement and our work is to financially support the completion of the construction of the Group’s leadership training Institute, because, despite the fact that there have been five Presidents after her, as Chair of the Group’s Fundraising Committee, she is involved in raising funds to see the Group’s headquarters and Gender and Women’s Leadership Training Institute completed at Tower Hill, strategically situated only a few hundred yards from the nation’s Parliament building.

About the BBC100 Women Season

After the 2012 Delhi gang rape, BBC editor Fiona Clark and other journalists were inspired to create a series focusing on the issues and achievements of women in society today.  The BBC launched this series in October 2013 and programming ran over the course of the month and has continued every year since.

On the 1st December, 2015, Nemata led a debate with members of the 50/50 and other Groups from 1 to 2 pm; another 99 women from all over the world also led debates in their groups or organisations at different times throughout the day. (www.bbc.com/100Women)
